5-HTP and SSRIs (General): Interaction Overview
5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is directly converted to serotonin in the brain.
Mechanism of Interaction
5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is directly converted to serotonin in the brain. SSRIs prevent serotonin reuptake, increasing synaptic serotonin levels. Combined, serotonin floods synapses with no reuptake clearance — a near-certain recipe for serotonin syndrome. This interaction is well-documented and considered one of the most dangerous supplement-drug combinations in the nootropic/supplement space.
Recommendation
NEVER combine 5-HTP with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants, or tramadol. If you want serotonin precursor support while tapering off SSRIs, wait at least 2 weeks after the last dose (longer for fluoxetine, which has a 4–6 day half-life requiring 5+ weeks washout).
