Mechanism of Interaction

Melatonin promotes sleep via MT1 and MT2 receptor agonism in the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Benzodiazepines (and Z-drugs: zolpidem, eszopiclone) potentiate GABA-A, causing significant CNS depression. Combined, morning grogginess, impaired coordination, memory consolidation issues, and respiratory depression risk increase. This is particularly relevant for elderly users.

Recommendation

⚠ Caution Advised

If using melatonin with a prescribed benzodiazepine or Z-drug, discuss with your doctor. Use minimum effective melatonin doses (0.5–1mg is often sufficient; many products contain 5–10mg, which is excessive). Avoid driving the morning after combining.
