Benzodiazepines and Magnesium Glycinate: Interaction Overview
Magnesium acts as a natural NMDA receptor antagonist and has mild muscle-relaxant properties, which may slightly potentiate benzodiazepine-induced CNS depression.
Mechanism of Interaction
Magnesium acts as a natural NMDA receptor antagonist and has mild muscle-relaxant properties, which may slightly potentiate benzodiazepine-induced CNS depression. At standard supplemental doses (200–400mg magnesium glycinate), the interaction is likely mild. Higher doses may cause meaningful additive sedation, especially in sensitive individuals or the elderly.
Recommendation
Standard supplemental magnesium (200–400mg glycinate) is generally well-tolerated alongside prescribed benzodiazepines. Be aware of increased drowsiness, especially at higher magnesium doses. Do not use magnesium as a substitute for prescribed benzodiazepines or to extend their effects.
